Glutathione and Fertility

 In Nutrition

Let me share with you some glutathione basics. Glutathione is a combination of the amino acids glutamine, glycine, and cystine. It is made naturally in our bodies and it’s a powerhouse of an antioxidant.

It protects our cells when we metabolize calories to make fuel!

Each cell has its own energy-producing department called a mitochondria. Without glutathione, these mitochondria can turn into a mini-Chernobyl and damage the cell itself, as well as the ones around it. Even though our bodies CAN make glutathione on their own, many people’s bodies aren’t very good at it. That’s why we offer glutathione as a treatment at JWP!

This is most evident in the cells of the ovary. In fact, in healthy ovaries the follicular fluid (the fluid that surrounds the eggs as they develops) is actually flowing with glutathione! That’s right, our egg cells swim in a glutathione bath as they get ready to ovulate! Without glutathione, these little eggs get damaged by the very process that allows them to grow. High glutathione = healthy eggs = healthy embryos = healthy babies!

Meanwhile, low levels of follicular glutathione are associated with premature ovarian aging and lower fertilization rates. Cue the sad trombone music.

Not only that, but glutathione appears to be helpful in the regulation of chronic inflammation, which is a HUGE contributing factor to infertility! Autoimmune conditions, anti-sperm antibodies, endometriosis, and PCOS sufferers are likely to benefit from increased glutathione the most!

So, what can YOU do to improve your glutathione?

– Green tea increases glutathione in your whole body, also, yum!

– Eat more cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower; especially broccoli sprouts!

– NAC supplementation can replenish your natural glutathione

– Come see us at JWP for some IV glutathione (bonus, it’ll make your skin glow like J-lo the next day)

Bottom line, here at JWP we have ALL the tools you need to boost your glutathione and keep your ovaries young. Book an appointment today or stop by for IV happy hour!
